How Deep Should Gravel Be?

Choose the layer depth before you calculate the quantity. Stone size, intended use and the construction beneath the decorative layer all affect the answer.

The useful answer to “how deep should gravel be?” is not one fixed number. A decorative strip around planting, a pedestrian path and a vehicle area do different jobs. The size and shape of the stone also affect how a layer covers the ground.

These are planning ranges, not structural specifications. Current supplier guidance itself varies: Gravelmaster gives examples from roughly 30–40mm for some 10mm aggregates and 40–50mm for some 20mm aggregates, while Stone Warehouse commonly uses 50mm for gravel and chippings up to 20mm and deeper layers for larger pebbles.

Stone size changes the depth you need

A layer has to be deep enough to cover the surface and let the pieces settle together. A coarse rounded pebble cannot create the same visual coverage at the same shallow depth as a smaller angular chipping. That is why a calculator should never force one fixed depth.

The decorative gravel layer is not the whole construction

For a stable path, the soil beneath the gravel matters as much as the top layer. Soft, uneven ground can allow stone to disappear into the surface or rut under repeated use. A suitable compacted base, drainage and edge restraint may be needed depending on the project.

Landscape membrane can help separate gravel from soil in some situations, but it does not replace a structurally appropriate base. Likewise, edging is not merely decorative: it can help keep loose gravel from migrating into lawns or beds.

Vehicle areas need more than a gravel-depth answer. If the area carries vehicles, treat the decorative stone as the surface layer of a larger construction. The required sub-base and drainage depend on ground conditions, loads and the chosen system.

How depth changes the amount of gravel you buy

For a fixed area, volume rises directly with depth. On a 20m² area:

Choosing 70mm rather than 40mm increases the material volume by 75%. Decide the layer before using bag or tonne coverage claims.

  2. Choose the depth for the actual stone size and use.
  3. Check whether the substrate/base is already at the correct level.
  4. Read the supplier's stated bag weight, volume or coverage.
  5. Keep a small ordering allowance separate from the mathematical requirement.
