Keep the project decisions separate from the arithmetic
Area is not perimeter
Square metres describe a surface. Linear metres describe an edge. A gravel bed may need both: area for the aggregate and membrane, then perimeter or run length for edging. Keep those measurements separate instead of trying to reuse one number everywhere.
Split awkward shapes into zones
Rectangles, circles and triangles can be measured exactly with basic geometry. For an irregular garden, sketch the space, divide it into simple zones, subtract known exclusions and keep a note of which measurements are approximate.
Depth turns area into volume
Material calculators need a third dimension. Convert millimetres or centimetres to metres before multiplying by square metres, or use the shortcut that 1mm spread over 1m² equals 1 litre.
