Which garden shape should you choose?

Use the simplest shape that closely matches each part of the garden. An irregular plot rarely needs one complicated formula: it is usually easier to break it into two or more measured sections, calculate those sections separately and add them together. Permanent features that were included in your outside measurements can be entered as exclusions.

How the area calculation works

The calculator converts every dimension into metres first, calculates each zone in square metres, then adds positive zones and subtracts exclusions. It also converts the final square-metre result into square feet for reference.

Core formulas: rectangle = length × width; square = side²; circle = π × radius²; triangle = ½ × base × perpendicular height; L-shape = outer rectangle − rectangular cut-out.

How to measure an irregular garden without guessing

Make a quick sketch before you start measuring. Mark the main changes in direction, permanent features and any parts you want to calculate separately. Most awkward gardens can then be represented by several rectangles plus an occasional triangle or circle. A sketch also reduces the risk of counting the same patch twice.

If the outline is very curved, do not invent a precision the measurements cannot support. Split the curve into sensible sections, measure the key widths, and use an approximation suitable for ordering garden materials. Measure exclusions only when they are inside the area you entered

A shed, pond, patio or path should be subtracted only if it sits inside an area that you already counted. For example, if you measure the full 12 m × 8 m back garden and a 3 m × 2 m shed sits inside that rectangle, the shed can be entered as a 6 m² exclusion. If you measured the lawn around the shed as separate zones, subtracting it again would double-count the deduction.

What changes when the garden slopes?

For many material-ordering jobs you want the plan area: the footprint seen from above. A tape laid directly along a steep slope measures the sloping surface, which is longer than the horizontal run. On a mild slope the difference may be small for rough planning; on a pronounced slope, terraces, retaining work or precise surfacing may need separate measurements rather than one flat-area estimate.

Using the result for different garden jobs

Turf and seed

Measure the actual lawn footprint, subtract beds or permanent features that are not grass, then use the finished area in the turf or grass-seed calculator.

Topsoil, compost and mulch

Area is only the first step. Quantity also depends on finished depth, so transfer the area into the relevant volume calculator.

Gravel and membrane

Measure the ground you will actually cover. Gravel then needs a depth and density assumption; membrane also needs roll dimensions and overlap.

Paving

Measure the paved footprint separately from beds and lawn. The slab calculator converts that area into a slab quantity using the slab dimensions and allowance.

Common garden-measurement mistakes

  • Using a diagonal as a triangle height. The triangle formula needs the perpendicular height from the base.
  • Mixing metres and centimetres. Pick one input unit for the whole calculation; the tool handles conversion.
  • Subtracting something twice. Only use an exclusion if that feature was included in the added area.
  • Rounding every section too early. Measure reasonably accurately and let the calculator total the sections before you decide on a material allowance.
  • Confusing area with material quantity. Square metres tell you the footprint. Soil, mulch and gravel also require depth; turf needs roll coverage; seed and feed need an application rate.

When is an approximate area good enough?

For early budgeting or comparing material options, a sensible measured approximation can be enough. Before placing a large order, recheck the dimensions, confirm that all exclusions are treated consistently, and then apply the assumptions required by the specific material calculator. The calculator gives geometry; it does not replace supplier coverage information or site-specific judgement.

Worked example: garden with a shed

Suppose the full usable rectangle is 10 m × 8 m, but a 3 m × 2 m shed sits inside it. Add the 80 m² main rectangle and subtract the 6 m² shed. The planning area is 74 m². If a separate circular bed is also to be included, add it as another zone rather than trying to redraw the whole garden as one shape.
