Your lawn area is the measured requirement. The order figure is rounded up to whole rolls after your chosen allowance, so it can be higher than the pure mathematical minimum.

Why the turf roll dimensions matter

A lawn measured at 50 m² needs 50 m² of turf before any allowance, but that does not automatically mean 50 rolls. The number of rolls depends on the area covered by each roll. A roll measuring 0.4 m × 2.5 m covers 1 m²; a different product may cover a different area. The calculator therefore multiplies your entered roll width by roll length instead of treating “one roll” as a fixed unit.

Calculation: roll area = roll width × roll length. Theoretical rolls = lawn area ÷ roll area. Order rolls = area with your allowance ÷ roll area, rounded up to a whole roll.

How to measure turf for a straightforward lawn

For a rectangle, multiply finished length by finished width. For circles and triangles, use the matching shape option. If the lawn is made from several separate sections, calculate the main area and add the other measured zones. Because turf is bought as whole rolls, 52.5 rolls becomes 53. If your supplier's roll covers less or more than 1 m², enter its actual dimensions and the roll count changes automatically.

Common turf-ordering mistakes

  • Measuring the entire garden rather than the lawn. Exclude patios, beds, sheds and other areas that will not be turfed.
  • Assuming every roll covers exactly 1 m². Check the supplier's product dimensions or stated coverage.
  • Adding an allowance twice. If a supplier quote already includes extra turf, do not automatically add another percentage here.
  • Ordering before the site is prepared. Turf is perishable. Coordinate preparation, delivery and laying rather than treating them as separate jobs.

Before the turf arrives

RHS guidance stresses that good soil preparation is important, including removing perennial weeds, loosening compacted soil, levelling and firming the surface. The maths assumes the turf pieces provide the coverage implied by the dimensions you enter. It does not model damaged rolls, unusable cuts, delivery minimums or site-specific installation practice.
