How the topsoil calculation works
Topsoil quantity begins with a three-dimensional measurement. First find the ground area in square metres. Then convert the required soil depth into metres. Multiplying those two figures gives cubic metres; multiplying cubic metres by 1,000 gives litres.
1 m³ = 1,000 litres.
Why volume comes before weight
The hole or soil layer you are filling has a volume whether the topsoil is dry, wet, screened or blended. Weight is less stable: the same cubic metre can weigh differently because moisture and composition change bulk density. That is why this calculator keeps the volume result primary and treats weight as an editable estimate.
Rolawn's current guidance makes the same distinction: it recommends calculating the cubic metres first and notes that bulk density varies, so product specifications should be checked where available. If your supplier quotes by tonnes, use their density or conversion rather than treating the default on this page as a guarantee.
Useful topsoil depth starting points
The correct depth is a project decision, not a calculator constant. The RHS says laying lawns needs at least a 10 cm layer of topsoil, while new beds need about 20 cm or more. Rolawn's current calculation guidance describes roughly 100–150 mm for many new lawn rootzones. Those figures are useful starting points, but existing soil quality, the final level, what will grow there and how much soil is already present all matter.
Small bags, bulk bags and loose delivery
Packaging is where many topsoil calculations become misleading. UK suppliers sell small bags by litres, while bulk products can be described by volume, weight or both. Current examples include 25 L retail bags and bulk bags around 500 L or 750 L. The nickname “tonne bag” is not a reliable volume specification.
Use the supplier's stated volume where possible. If a bulk product is sold by weight, ask for the supplier's own coverage or bulk-density information. The calculator lets you enter both volume and weight details so you can see when the two estimates differ instead of hiding that uncertainty.
Why an allowance is optional
The exact geometry gives a base requirement. An ordering allowance is a separate planning choice. You might add one for uneven ground, measurement uncertainty, final levelling or expected settlement, but it should never be silently baked into the formula. Set the allowance to 0% if you want the pure measured figure.
Worked examples
100 mm = 0.10 m. 50 × 0.10 = 5 m³, which is 5,000 L. With 10% allowance the ordering volume becomes 5.5 m³ or 5,500 L.
50 mm = 0.05 m. 20 × 0.05 = 1 m³ = 1,000 L. If the chosen bag is 50 L, that is exactly 20 bags before any allowance.
150 mm = 0.15 m. 30 × 0.15 = 4.5 m³ = 4,500 L. The final packaging count depends on the supplier's bag size.
Common topsoil ordering mistakes
- Using centimetres as metres: 10 cm is 0.10 m, not 10 m.
- Assuming every bulk bag is the same: check the volume or weight printed by the supplier.
- Converting to tonnes too early: calculate volume first; weight depends on density.
- Ignoring existing levels: a “recommended” depth is useless if it leaves soil above paths, thresholds or edging.

- Confusing topsoil with compost: they serve different purposes; calculate the material actually being specified for the job.
