Why pond liner uses maximum depth

A liner has to travel from one edge, down to the deepest part of the excavation, and back up the other side. That is why the standard planning relationship adds twice the maximum depth to both the maximum length and maximum width. This is fundamentally different from the Pond Volume Calculator, where average depth is more representative of the water held.

Example

A 4m × 3m pond, 1m maximum depth, with 0.5m allowance on each edge gives 7m × 6m: 4 + 2 + 1, and 3 + 2 + 1. That is 42m² of rectangular liner sheet.

The edge allowance is per side

Some online explanations quote a total extra amount, while others talk about overlap on each edge. This calculator avoids that ambiguity by asking for the allowance per side and then adding it twice to each sheet dimension. Pondkeeper's current calculator explanation uses maximum length + twice maximum depth + an overall overlap amount; current product pages also show examples based on about 50cm each way. Because supplier advice can vary by liner type and installation, our value remains fully editable.

Anchor trenches, edging systems, folds, shelves, streams and waterfalls can all affect the material required. A generic rectangle cannot model every excavation.

Irregular ponds and shelves

The basic liner formula is intentionally conservative in a simple way: it wraps the maximum bounding length and width over the maximum depth. That does not mean it maps every fold. Complex shelves, vertical walls, deep pockets or attached streams may need more material in one direction. Measure the actual dug shape before ordering and compare your result with the supplier's sizing method.

Underlay is a protection layer, not an identical product

Pond-liner underlay protects the waterproof membrane from stones, roots and rough surfaces. The calculator offers an optional underlay-pack estimate only if you enter the supplier's stated square-metre coverage. It uses the liner rectangle as a planning area; it does not claim all underlay systems have identical overlaps, thicknesses or installation methods.

Worked examples

0.5m per side

4 × 3 × 1m pond → 7m × 6m liner = 42m².

0.3m per side

Same excavation → 6.6m × 5.6m = 36.96m².

Underlay packs

If the supplier says one pack covers 10m², 42m² needs 5 whole packs before any product-specific overlap.

Do not use average depth here

The liner must reach the deepest point even though most water may be shallower.
