Paving Wastage: How Much Extra Paving Should You Order?

Wastage is not a magic 10%. It is an ordering allowance for the cuts, breakages, awkward edges and future matching problems that your actual layout creates.

What paving wastage actually covers

The theoretical area calculation assumes every square centimetre of every slab becomes useful finished paving. Real patios rarely work like that. Perimeter cuts create pieces that may not fit elsewhere, obstacles interrupt the pattern, a slab can chip or break, and natural stone or porcelain may need extra selection to keep the finished appearance consistent.

That does not mean the calculator should quietly add a universal percentage. The useful approach is to keep the base requirement visible, then choose a separate ordering allowance.

Why you keep seeing 10% — and why it is not a law

Ten per cent is common in current UK retail and manufacturer guidance. Wickes currently builds 10% directly into its online paving calculator. Bradstone recommends purchasing up to 10% extra for mistakes, damage and cuts around obstacles. Some suppliers advise a wider range: Port Stone currently recommends 10–20% to cover cutting and possible damage.

Those figures are useful context, not proof that every patio needs exactly 10%. A simple rectangular patio laid in a straightforward pattern may generate relatively little unusable material. A patio with curves, diagonal laying, steps, drains and multiple angles can generate much more.

Layout can matter more than patio size

Two patios can have exactly the same area and need different order quantities. A 20 m² rectangle with a grid that works cleanly around the perimeter may use slabs efficiently. The same 20 m² laid diagonally or around a curved bed can create a larger number of partial edge pieces.

Fewer complicated perimeter cuts can mean a smaller practical allowance.

Diagonal / patterned layout

More perimeter cuts usually mean more offcuts and a stronger reason for extra material.

Curves and obstacles

A curve, drain cover, tree pit, step or projecting wall can turn otherwise reusable rectangular offcuts into one-off shapes. Measure those features before ordering; a percentage selected after looking at the layout is more useful than a percentage chosen because “10% is standard”.

Mixed-size project packs should be planned by pack coverage and pattern

Paving Direct's current pattern guidance shows why mixed packs are a special case: contractor packs commonly contain three to five different slab sizes designed to work together in a specific laying pattern. The pack coverage already reflects the supplied mix. Do not take the average piece size and divide the patio area by it.

Check whether the supplier sells split packs, whether the pack is designed around a repeatable module, and what area the full pack covers. A little extra coverage from a second pack can be very different from buying a few individual slabs.

Installation wastage and deliberate spare slabs are not the same thing

It can be sensible to keep matching slabs for a future repair, especially where colour or texture varies by batch. That is a deliberate stock decision. Keep it separate from the cutting allowance so you know why the extra material is being ordered.

Port Stone's current guidance also highlights batch consistency as a reason to order the full quantity together. Natural stone and manufactured paving can show tonal variation, so a later top-up is not always an exact visual match.

Worked example: keeping the base and allowance separate

Suppose a 20 m² patio uses 600 × 600 mm slabs. The face area of each slab is 0.36 m², so the theoretical requirement is 55.56 slabs and the whole-unit minimum is 56.

The table does not say that 5%, 10% or 15% is correct. It shows the purchase consequence of the allowance you choose.

Common mistakes when choosing a paving allowance

  1. Adding a percentage twice. Check whether your retailer's pack calculator or quote already includes waste.
  2. Ignoring the laying pattern. Diagonal and mixed-size layouts behave differently from simple grids.
  3. Assuming every offcut is reusable. A piece cut around one obstacle may have no useful home elsewhere.
  4. Forgetting batch matching. A later order may not look identical, even when the product name is the same.
