Topdressing is a shallow application over an existing lawn. The core maths is simple — 1 mm over 1 m² equals 1 litre — but the useful answer depends on choosing an appropriate depth and the packaging of the actual product you plan to buy.

Current UK guidance varies by product and purpose. Rolawn gives product-specific examples of 1.5 L/m² in summer and up to 3 L/m² in spring/autumn; the Turfgrass Growers Association and UK Lawn Care Association give broader quantity examples around 0.5–1 m³ per 100 m². Choose a depth that fits your lawn and product rather than treating any preset as a rule.

How the lawn topdressing calculation works

Topdressing quantity is a volume calculation. Convert the selected depth to metres, multiply it by the lawn area, then convert cubic metres to litres. For shallow lawn work there is an even quicker way to think about it: each millimetre of depth needs one litre per square metre. That means 60 m² at 3 mm needs 180 litres, while the same lawn at 6 mm needs 360 litres.

Formula: area (m²) × depth (m) = volume (m³). For shallow layers, litres = area (m²) × depth (mm).

Why volume and weight are not interchangeable

One cubic metre of a dry, sand-heavy dressing does not necessarily weigh the same as one cubic metre of a moist loam-rich product. Current UK suppliers sell lawn dressings in very different ways: some specify a volume such as a 500-litre bulk bag, while others sell 500 kg, 750 kg or one-tonne bags. That is why this calculator keeps volume as the primary result and only estimates kilograms or tonnes when you supply a density.

The same 100 m² lawn at 3 mm needs 300 litres; at 10 mm it needs 1,000 litres. This is why choosing the depth deserves as much attention as measuring the lawn.

Topdressing is different from adding topsoil

A Topsoil Calculator is appropriate when you are creating or replacing a meaningful soil depth — for example during turf preparation or a bed project. Lawn topdressing is a shallow layer worked into an existing sward. Treating a 50 mm topsoil layer and a 3 mm topdressing as the same project would produce very different material quantities and very different effects on the grass.

Do not bury the lawn to chase a level

Rolawn's current guidance says the dressing should be worked into the sward and should not smother the grass; the grass should remain clearly visible when the job is finished. The Rolawn topdressing guide gives product-specific seasonal examples, while the Turfgrass Growers Association gives a broader 0.5–1 m³ per 100 m² rule of thumb. Those figures illustrate why application context matters rather than establishing one universal depth.

Material choice is product- and lawn-specific

RHS autumn lawn guidance describes topdressing after aeration and provides one home-mix example of sandy loam, sharp sand and well-rotted compost/soil improver. Commercial products vary widely: current UK suppliers sell sand-heavy blends, loam/sand mixes and other formulations. The calculator therefore does not prescribe a universal 70/30 or similar mix. Use a product suitable for your lawn, existing soil and purpose. RHS lawn-care guidance is a useful reference for the horticultural context.

Common ordering mistakes

  • Entering centimetres as millimetres. A 5 cm layer is ten times the volume of 5 mm and would be a very different job.
  • Converting tonnes from a guessed density. Use the supplier's density or stated coverage where possible.
  • Treating every bulk bag as the same size. Current products are sold by both volume and weight in different bag sizes.
  • Trying to fix a major hollow in one pass. Calculate the quantity, but check the repair method before applying a deep one-off layer.
  • Forgetting separate lawn sections. Add separately measured zones or calculate the full irregular lawn area first.

Calculation assumptions

The tool assumes an even average depth across the area entered. Real application can vary as material is worked into aeration holes, low spots and the sward. Bag counts round upward to whole packs.
