Lawn Topdressing Depth: How Much Should You Apply?

Choose a shallow application deliberately, understand what each millimetre means in litres, and know when a low spot is too deep to treat as a one-pass topdressing job.

Start with the job, not a random percentage or bag count

Topdressing is a thin layer of compatible material spread over an existing lawn and worked into the sward. For quantity planning, every millimetre matters: 1 mm over 1 m² equals 1 litre. Horticulturally, however, the right layer depends on the lawn, product, season and reason for dressing.

What current UK guidance actually says

There is no single universal topdressing depth. Rolawn's current product guidance gives examples of up to 3 litres per m² (about 3 mm) in spring/autumn and up to 1.5 litres per m² in summer for its own lawn topdressing, and stresses that the grass should remain visible rather than being smothered. The UK Lawn Care Association and Turfgrass Growers Association give a broader rule of thumb of about 0.5–1 m³ per 100 m², which is mathematically equivalent to an average 5–10 mm layer if spread evenly.

Those figures are not contradictory instructions for every lawn: they come from different contexts and products. Use them as context, then follow the product and lawn-management guidance that applies to your job. RHS autumn lawn guidance also describes topdressing after aeration and gives a weight-based rate for its particular mix. Weight-based rates cannot be converted safely to a depth without knowing the material's bulk density.

Why shallow layers matter

Topdressing works by getting material between the grass leaves and into small surface imperfections, aeration holes and the upper lawn profile. A visible blanket of material sitting above the grass is a warning sign that too much has been left on the surface. Rolawn specifically advises working dressing into the sward with the back of a rake or a stiff brush and keeping the grass clearly visible.

Once the material has been worked in, the grass should still be visible. If the lawn looks buried, the layer needs reassessing rather than simply adding more because a calculator returned that volume.

Topdressing after aeration or renovation

RHS describes topdressing as a step that can follow aeration, helping fill aeration holes. Rolawn also describes topdressing alongside tasks such as scarification, hollow tining and overseeding when relevant. This does not mean those jobs must always be combined; it means the purpose of the dressing changes how it is used. Topdressing for minor levelling

Topdressing can help smooth slight unevenness, but there is a practical difference between gradually improving minor surface variation and filling a deep hollow. A deep depression can have an underlying cause — settlement, poor drainage, construction levels or local damage — that is not solved by applying a large blanket depth across the whole lawn.

Choosing a topdressing material

Topdressing products are not interchangeable. RHS provides one example mix for an autumn lawn-care job, while commercial UK products range from sand-heavy lawn dressings to loam/soil blends. Some current suppliers publish formulations such as 90% sand/10% topsoil or 70/30 blends, but those are product specifications, not universal lawn recipes.

Choose a material with the actual lawn and purpose in mind. Existing soil texture, drainage, the construction of the lawn, renovation goals and the product manufacturer's guidance all matter. If you are uncertain about compatibility, seek product-specific or professional advice rather than copying a ratio from an unrelated lawn.

Volume is usually the cleanest quantity to calculate

Topdressing can be sold by litres, cubic metres, kilograms or tonnes. A 500-litre bag is a volume; a one-tonne bulk bag is a weight. You cannot reliably swap between those measures without the bulk density of that exact mix. Moisture content and the proportion of sand, loam and organic material can change weight substantially.

Worked examples

Applying the material evenly

Current UK guidance generally describes distributing the dressing in small, even amounts and then working it into the lawn with a rake, brush or similar tool. The aim is an even surface without clumps. Apply to a suitable, actively growing lawn according to the product guidance, and do not assume that a calculated quantity has to be forced onto the lawn if the surface is already adequately dressed.

Rolawn advises not mowing immediately after its topdressing application and suggests watering after working the product in. Follow the instructions for the product and lawn-care programme you are actually using.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing millimetres and centimetres. 5 cm is 50 mm, so it requires ten times as much material as 5 mm.
  • Using a weight rate with a different material. Kilograms per square metre depend on the mix and density.
  • Trying to fix severe levels with one blanket layer. A volume calculation is not a repair specification.
  • Copying a sand/soil ratio as if it were universal. Commercial products and lawn conditions vary.
  • Ordering by a bulk-bag name rather than its stated capacity. Current UK bags vary by both litres and kilograms.
